Pichwai art is a traditional Indian painting style that originated over 400 years ago in Nathdwara, Rajasthan, a town famous for the temple of Shreenathji (a form of Lord Krishna). The word Pichwai comes from the Sanskrit words pichh (back) and wai (hanging), meaning “that which hangs at the back.” These intricate paintings were originally created as backdrops for the idol of Shreenathji in the temple and depict scenes from the life of Lord Krishna, especially his childhood as a cowherd in Vrindavan.
